DO NOT USE SQUARE BRACKETS NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO 1A1 PRESCRIBED PUNCTUATION. REMOVED FROM SECTION ON DEVISED TITLES. 1/19/10
NEED TO CHANGE 1A4.1 ON DEVISED TITLES TO STATE THAT THERE ARE MATERIALS THAT NORMALLY HAVE TITLES BUT THAT DO NOT HAVE ONE OR IS UNREADABLE, SO NEED DEVISED TITLE.
NEED TO ADD A SECTION ABOUT NOT USING ABBREVIATIONS SUCH AS ALS, TLS, MSS ETC. 1/19/10
KSM 3/2010: If those abbreviations or others are used in other areas of a record I think the instructions should go in Area 0. If they're always only used in the title area then we can add them to Area 1A. For the time being I did not add a section in Area 1A.
Footnote 1: change "when there is no formal title FOR the item being described"
TO: "when there is no formal title associated with the item being described" [MOVE COMMENT TO 1B] - DO NOT MAKE THIS PROPOSED CHANGE, BUT DO CHANGE FOOTNOTE TO READ; CHANGE FROM FOOTNOTE TO GLOSSARY ENTRY AND DELETE LAST SENTENCE. - JKN TO MAKE CHANGE ASAP.
1A1 -- What is 0E? - IGNORE
1A2 -- Wording of last sentence is unclear due to use of "title statement." Perhaps replacement with "devised title" would be clearer. - DONE
1A2 Insert “in” at end of first sentence: “… on the manuscript or in other sources.” - DONE
F&p: apostrophe in “creator’s”
1A2. generally, the "supplied" versus "formal" isn't confusing, but it is a bit confusing in 1A2. where it says title and date "must be supplied if they do not appear on the manuscript or other sources." It reminds me of a problem with the current Graphic Materials rules (the ones we're replacing with DCRM(G)) where it says something like "alternatively, use any source" which makes it sound like you could write the answer you want on a piece of paper and use that. It's clarified a bit in the next paragraph (1A3.) where it says that you can use "any reliable reference source" but then muddied
again in 1B2. where it talks about titles from housing, which isn't really a "reference source". Or is "reference source" a broader term than I'm used to? - RESOLVED BECAUSE AREA WHERE REFERENCE SOURCES WERE ADDRESSED WAS IN AREA 0. CONSIDER MOVING REFERENCE SOURCES DISCUSSION TO AREA 1.
KSM 3/2010: I suggest keeping instructions on reference sources in Area 0 since they apply to most areas.
1A4/1A5: “Versus”? DCRM(B)/(S) uses “vs.” in the Introduction. But, is that really the word you want to use here? I acknowledge the need to explain the differences (which can certainly be done also in the glossary), but maybe 1A4 could be simply “Titles” and 1A5 could be “Creators”? In 1A5 the “versus” really doesn’t make sense. Maybe 1A5.1 could be “Creator as part of title proper” or “Creator as part of devised title” and 1A5.2 could be “Formal statements of responsibility”.
OK
1A4 and 1A5: It's a bit new for me to see this sort of "explanatory" information
in the body of the rules, and I'm not sure whether this is the best place for it
- though I'm not prepared to suggest an alternative. But a good deal of 1A4.2
especially strikes me as information that might belong in the glossary. - WE ARE TAKING CONCERN ABOUT CHATTINESS UNDER ADVISEMENT
1A4. The first time I read this section, I thought the examples were not particularly illuminating since the instructions for assigning devised and formal titles had not been given yet. However, I was not bothered by the examples in 1A5 which is a similar situation, so perhaps they are helpful – or perhaps examples that better illustrate the difference could be found? KEEPING
1A4 -- Perhaps reverse the order of “devised titles” and “formal titles.” I wonder if it makes more sense logically to discuss formal titles first and then talk about devised titles? - KEEP CURRENT ORDER. EXPLAIN IN INTRO SECTIONS THAT DEVISED TITLE IS MOST COMMON IN MANUSCRIPT CATALOGING AND THEREFORE SHOULD GO FIRST.
1A4.1
Last sentence: “Consult 1B1 For rules on how to devise titles if none exist, see 1B1.” DONE/FIXED
1A4.1: delete “if none exist”. Not clear if this refers to titles or rules. DONE
1A4.2
F&p: insert comma after “etc.” DONE
Last sentence: “For rules on how record formal titles, see 1B1.” DONE
1A5 -- Perhaps reverse the order of “creators” and “statements of responsibility” (see above comment). NO BECAUSE OF OUR REASONS STATED ABOVE
1A5
F&p: Delete period at end FIXED TAKE ALL PERIODS OFF OF HEADINGS THAT DO NOT HAVE RULES FOLLOWING
1A5.1. I’m assuming the first example should read “George Cruikshank drawings” instead of Cruikshang? EXAMPLE REMOVED
1A5.1
First sentence: “… lacks a formal statements (such as that those found on a title page) …” SKIPPED THE ADDITIONAL S FOR STATEMENT BUT ADDED THOSE
Last sentence: “For information rules on recording …” DONE
1A5.2: clarify that creator is added to title only for devised title. DONE
1A5.2. Typo: should be "Variationsrechnung" (or add a "[sic]") FIXED
1A5.2
Last sentence: “For information rules on transcribing …” DONE
1A5.2: The colophon of a manuscript - is it different from a colophon in a
printed book? If so, a new glossary entry may be needed for (MSS). IGNORE
AND: change "record this information as the statement of responsibility
ELEMENT." TO: "record this information as the statement of responsibility."
1A6.1. The second example Comment should read “devised title”, not formal title. FIXED
1A6.1 Photograph album on India (Comment: formal title) Is this meant to be an example of a devised title? FIXED NEED NEW EXAMPLE
1A6.1
Reverse order of paragraphs? Devised titles first, then formal? That is the order they are discussed in 1B.
Examples: Also reverse order? Is the “Photograph album on India” a devised title? If so, then correct comment. First word of comment should be capitalized. YES REVERSE ORDER AND EXAMPLES TO HAVE DEVISED TITLE FIRST
1A6.2. Could you give me more information about what you’re looking for in examples here? I might be able to help. THANKS WILL GET BACK TO YOU
1A6.2 -- Perhaps it was the lack of examples, but the meaning of the last sentence of the rule was unclear. How would you apply the rules differently depending on "the context of the of the finding aid hierarchy." EXAMPLES WILL HELP
